The Adventure Begins

It’s only been 5 days since we left Los Angeles, but it feels like a lifetime! The departure from Sherman Canal went very smoothly. When the movers came to take our bed away into storage, we prevailed on them to take all our cartons and suitcases down to the garage so they could be easily loaded into the van. Steve and Gillian arrived at the house at about 12:30 and we got to spend a little time with them before we left. They brought us wonderful incense sticks to take with us (the perfect bon voyage gift since they take up no space at all and weigh practically nothing). The van arrived right on time with all the seats removed, and was quickly loaded up with not an inch to spare. I had a tearful goodbye with Rosa and then we all piled into the van for the short ride to the airport. A representative from Dav-El met us at the airport and arranged for a porter to take care of the bags. She even warned us that the woman that we would have been sent to at the counter was very strict – so we let the people behind us go ahead and we got a nice man to check us in. We had no problem getting Belle approved and, after going through security (also pretty easy because of the porter and also because we were told by Belle’s groomer the night before to be sure and take off her collar and leash before carrying her through the metal detector), we proceeded to the VIP lounge at Lufthansa. That is really a misnomer – there was no food to speak of and I was starving because we left the house at 1 p.m. and ate breakfast at 7 a.m. But they let us take Belle out of the case, and that, of course, was the most important thing!
Business Class on Lufthansa is really great – the seats are very comfortable and recline into a real bed. Best of all the configuration is such that the space under the seat in front of you is enormous – not only wide and deep, but very high, so that Belle’s large case (the one she can stand up in) fit easily. The food was really good and the video on demand even had a movie I wanted to see (Matador with Pierce Brosnan). By 8 p.m. we were ready for our bed, so I took Belle out of her case and snuggled up. That’s when the problems began.
To be continued . . .
